Information For Tutors

Our Competitors

Most of our competitors have been shut down by the DTi as it is illegal to charge someone a fee for finding them work (this is why agencies charge the employer a fee). One site even charged tutors £75 a year to advertise on it!

Unbelievable!

This site is not an agency and so it works with the DTi to ensure that it continues to meet their guidelines.

It is important to note that most of our current competitors have very poorly designed and maintained websites (not that this one is perfect... but it is constantly being improved). Who ever you decide to go with, it is important that you feel that students will use their site to find you and that you will get your money's worth!

Below are our main competitors. Before you advertise with anyone, try to find them with Google using search terms that a student would use to find you. If you find another site in the process then please let us know! If you can not find A+ Tutors when you do the searches (rare but does happen) then, again, please let us know and we will do something about it.

  • UK Tutors.com - First appeared in March 2007. It is free, continues to be improved and, after 7 years at the top, knocked this site off the Google No.1 spot (September 2007) for the search phrase "UK Tutors". Admittedly, this is not a very useful search term but, all the same, the site is definitely recommended.
  • The Tutor Pages - A new site (March 2008). It currently relies on Google Adwords (pay per click) for visitors rather than search engine results. It is free for the time being. I like it and it has promise but, at the moment, I can only recommended it because it is free.
  • Local Tutor - A new site to hit the Google high spots (March 2008). It is free and returns some pretty good Google results. Still, I do not like the user interface and site design (the the home page is busy and difficult to follow). Recommended - but only because it is free.
  • Tutors Online - Our main competitor. Similar to this site but with more non-academic tutors and music tutors (don't know why). They have always been over priced but finally dropped their rate from £30 to £12 per year in August 2005. After much neglect the site has finally received an upgrade (August 2005) although it still might not meet DTi guidelines. Recommended.
  • First Tutors - A new site to hit a few of the Google high spots (March 2008). Don't be fooled. They try to present themselves as not being an agency but by law they are. I would not use them simply because they are an agency which tries to avoid agency laws and regulations. However, on a per student basis they are also expensive (a typical example would be £9.38 for you plus £7.50 for the student). As for the site, I do not like the user interface but the site design is quite nice. Not Recommended.
  • Personal Tutors - A tutor agency. Advertises a lot with Google. Need to complete a form to receive a free list of tutors. It's an agency so it receives a commission for each tutorial (about £4.50).
  • Anysubject Ltd - A tutor agency which also allows tutors to advertise on it's site (don't believe that this is legal but never mind). A very confusing site. Very poor agency rates for all concerned (high for student, low for tutor).
  • Home Tutors Directory - Two years old, just had a boost in it's Google ranking (Sept 2007). Organised in a very similar way to this site but looks awful. An advert is £20 per year or £14 for three months. Definitely not worth this much yet. However they do offer a Guide for New tutors which has a couple of points not mentioned yet on this site. Has potential but they should consider making the basic advert free for a few years (like this site did) to prove that it is worth advertising on.
  • Fleet Tutors (now Fleet Education Services Ltd.) - an agency. From a tutor's perspective the site isn't very informative. Clients must phone for more info.
  • Tutor Groups (Examstutor.com) - an agency.
  • Alpha Tutors - an agency.
  • Tutor.Ac - a foreign agency. I really despise these people but they might be worth using. To know more please see my review of Tutor.Ac.
  • Top Tutors - an agency for London and the South East.

As for A+ Tutors, it is important to remember that it is still being developed and every penny earned by the website is spent on the website.
